- This hourglass-shaped drum, Korea’s most representative
percussion instrument, is a celadon piece that adopts the sgraffiato technique.
Black clay is used to draw arabesque designs, and the remaining part of the surface is scraped off for an embossing effect. The somewhat dark and rough arabesque pattern on the bright, soft celadon background is the reflection of the superb grasp of texture and color by the craftsman. - The instrument is played by beating cow or horse skin stretched over both sides of the piece. Drums are mostly made of wood, however, this drum made of celadon creates a higher, clearer sound than its wooden counterparts. |
