A symbol of unlimited mercy, Avalokitesvara (or Gwanseum Bosal in Korean) is the most popular divinity among Korean Buddhists, and her name literally means ‘Seeing the World’s Voice.’ While she is sometimes remembered as an acolyte to Amitabha in the Western Pure Land, she is more commonly a subject of religious worship on her own. She is believed to deliver human beings to nirvana when she hears their voices chant her name. One of the most widely known of the many manifestations of Avalokitesvara is the figure with a ‘thousand hands and thousand eyes,’ symbolizing the deliverance of human beings from all suffering with one thousand hands and by seeing them with one thousand eyes.
